During several winters, Rick Lamplugh and his wife, Mary, volunteered and lived at the Lamar Buffalo Ranch in the remote northeastern corner of Yellowstone National Park.
In a week that saw one coyote killed by authorities and more under fire in a planned cull, in two separate Canadian cities, numerous questions remain. The killing occurred on December 10 in the north end of Winnipeg.

Yellowstone’s coyotes had no idea who the new dog in the neighborhood was when wolves were reintroduced in the park after a seventy-year absence. Generations of coyotes had come and gone without a wolf in sight. But coyotes soon learned that these new dogs sure could bring down elk.
Coyote Watch Canada’s consistent message is “it takes a community to build coexistence”. From resident, educator, media, wildlife organization to politician, to the rehabilitation facility, the efforts and partnerships forged to create sustainable, effective wildlife programs must involve the community as a whole.
Our Song Dog Sunday messages are to encourage coyote fans to share inspiring and educational blasts about the Eastern Coyote. Often times, residents have not observed a coyote in the wild and the only opportunity to learn about coyote ecology is through media and social outlets.
